Howdy, y’all! This Seattle girl is about to experience the Southwest! My boyfriend, Rob, is living in New Mexico right now, so I will be visiting him this week! I flew in to El Paso since it is only an hour and a half away from Holloman Air Force Base, which is where he is stationed. We spent our first 24 hours together exploring El Paso through our stomachs. We love food and found some delicious restaurants!
Stop 1: Chico’s Tacos. This was our first stop after leaving the airport. While researching places to go in El Paso, I came across this fast food restaurant because it had been on The Food Network’s show, The Best Thing I Ever Ate. We tried the rolled beef tacos, which they are famous for. These fried, rolled tortillas are stuffed with beef, topped with cheese and served floating in tomato juice. They were tasty and different from most Mexican food, but I wouldn’t say it’s the best thing I’ve ever eaten. I liked the hot dog sandwich better. Two hot dogs were cut in half and served on a hamburger bun with chili, mustard and pickles. It was a great combination!
Stop 2: L & J Cafe. This hole-in-the-wall restaurant serves delicious, authentic Mexican food. I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed after looking at their expansive menu and tasting their chips and salsa (amazing!). I couldn’t decide what to get so I ordered the combo tacos, which included one guacamole taco (my favorite!), one chicken taco and one meat taco. The tortillas were cooked perfectly and the filling was very flavorful! Rob ordered the sirloin chile con queso. It was delicious! I learned that they like to put green chile on everything down here. I thought it would be spicy (which I can’t stand), but it wasn’t and it added so much flavor! Needless to say I stole a few bites off of his plate… Okay, more than a few.
Stop 3: Crave Kitchen & Bar. Last, but definitely not least! When we went for brunch around noon there was a 30 minute wait, but it was completely worth it! The modern decor, yet casual, local atmosphere was perfect for enjoying the amazing food. I couldn’t pass up the turkey, brie and bacon sandwich. It came on ciabatta bread with garlic aoili, cranberry chutney and lettuce. I chose sweet potato waffle fries as my side, which were cooked perfectly! I hate when they don’t even taste like sweet potatoes because they are too fried, so these were amazing! Rob got the biscuits and green chile gravy, which came with two eggs, sausage and a side. His side was green chile mac ‘n cheese. I’ve learned that green chile makes everything better! We finished off our meal with the “pot” brownie, which got its name because it is served in a pot (just in case there is any confusion… ha). It was topped with vanilla gelato, pecans and caramel sauce. It was the perfect ending to our time in El Paso.
